The United States Senate unsurprisingly approved Marco Rubio's appointment as head of diplomacy. The former Florida senator's nomination received support from 99 senators present during the vote, out of 100 members of the Upper Chamber, with no opposition. Marco Rubio, a close ally of President Donald Trump, has long advocated for cooperation with Morocco. This was evident in his statements last week during a Senate session focused on Africa. He praised Morocco's progress, particularly following its commitment on December 10, 2020, to the Abraham Accords process, launched during Donald Trump's previous term (2017–2021). However, he expressed regret that economic relations with Rabat fall short of the depth of political and historical ties between the two countries. Algerian media accused Rubio in September 2022 of being in the service of the Moroccan lobby in Washington. They were reacting to the former senator's initiative calling on Antony Blinken to impose sanctions against Algeria for its «financing» of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, in accordance with the «Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act», adopted by senators and representatives and subsequently signed in August 2017 by President Donald Trump.
