Merzouga, renowned for its stunning sand dunes, lush oases, and the hospitality of its people, has recently gained a new attraction: the return of the flamingos. These majestic birds now soar over Lake Dayet Srij, a nature reserve located just a few kilometers from Merzouga, in the province of Errachidia. The lake, known for its exceptional biodiversity, hosts numerous species of wild birds, thanks to the abundant rains that have fallen since September in the Drâa-Tafilalet region. Hamid Segaoui, a tour guide in Merzouga, explains that flamingos had not been seen in the area since 2019. Their return is due to the mild climate and abundant food, creating ideal conditions for these migratory birds. They make a stopover in Merzouga during their migration between southern Africa and Europe. Lake Dayet Srij is home not only to flamingos but also to storks, doves, wild ducks, larks, and many other species, offering an impressive visual spectacle for visitors. In addition to Dayet Srij, the region also boasts Erg Znigui and Yasmina lakes. These sites attract numerous tourists, particularly birdwatchers, who come to admire the beauty of the landscapes and the diversity of birdlife.
