Former Algerian diplomat and former UN envoy for Libya Lakhdar Brahimi addressed this week the Western Sahara issue. Interviewed by Russia Today (RT), he commented on the post of Special Envoy for Western Sahara. «The UN Secretary General has taken too long to appoint an envoy for the region», he said, adding that «the Security Council is not in a position to assume its responsibility for security and peace in the world. Its members did not manage to agree with the UN Secretary General on an emissary to the Sahara, as for Libya». «This is very unfortunate», he added. Lakhdar Brahimi commented on the US' recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara. «Unfortunately, there has been no progress in the negotiations between the government of Morocco and the Polisario Front», he said. «Jared Kushner indicated, a few days ago in Rabat, that the negotiation between the parties directly concerned - and he speaks of Morocco and the Polisario -, must be done under the auspices of the UN for a mutually acceptable solution. I hope that it will be done», declared the former Algerian diplomat. «In my opinion, if Morocco and the Polisario Front negotiated in good faith, in the same way the Kingdom negotiated with the United States, it would have been better for both parties to the conflict and better than negotiation with the United States».
