Kuwait reassures Morocco, stating that it supports the Kingdom's stance on the Western Sahara territorial dispute. This move comes as the same country defended Friday the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination. The Kuwaiti Foreign Affairs Ministry has reacted Sunday to the Security Council vote, supporting the Moroccan stance, MAP news agency says. The country's decision comes as it was criticized before for backing the Polisario's version of the story during the UN vote at the Security Council on Friday. An official source at the Foreign Ministry said that Kuwait's stance on the issue has remained unchanged and that «Morocco's Sahara» is the term adopted as part of the discourse of Kuwait's foreign policy, Kuwait news agency KUNA reported Sunday. Kuwait's intervention at the UN Security Council has been denounced, going viral on social media. So far, the Kingdom has not reacted officially yet to the Gulf country's statements. Meanwhile, the Polisario welcomed Kuwait's move describing it as a country that «calls on the Security Council to respect the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination». Kuwait defends the Polisario's stance For the record, Kuwait's representative at the UN, Mansour Laataibi, defended at the Security Council «the right of Sahrawis to self-determination», calling all parties to respect international legality and inviting them to «lead unconditional negotiations». On the other hand, Kuwaiti official stressed on his country's support for the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2414 of last Friday on the issue. The Security Council adopted, Friday, a resolution that extends the MINURSO's mandate for six months. Twelve countries have voted in favor of the draft resolution submitted by the United States while three others have chosen to abstain, namely Russia, Ethiopia and China. In the resolution adopted, the Security Council expresses concerns regarding the presence of the Polisario Front in the buffer strip in Guerguerat.
