After the 2035 Women's World Cup was awarded to England, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) announced on Thursday a project for a joint bid with Spain and Morocco to host the following edition in 2039. In a statement, the FPF announced that it is in discussions with its Spanish and Moroccan counterparts to «co-organize a Women's World Cup». This initiative follows an earlier joint attempt for the 2035 edition, which was recently disclosed by the president of the Spanish Federation (RFEF), Rafael Louzán. However, that ambition was thwarted: the English Football Association (FA) confirmed on Thursday that it had been the sole candidate to host the 2035 tournament, officially securing the hosting rights. The announcement follows a statement by FIFA President Gianni Infantino at the 49th UEFA Congress in Belgrade, in which he confirmed that only one European bid was submitted for the 2035 tournament, in addition to a separate bid from the United States and other Concacaf countries for 2031. The application process closed last Monday. FIFA regulations published in early March specified that federations from CAF (Africa) and Concacaf (North and Central America) were eligible to submit bids for 2031, while those from CAF and UEFA could apply for 2035.
