The Sumar party has urged the Spanish government to seek explanations from Morocco after three Basque parliamentarians were barred from entering Laayoune. According to Sumar, the parliamentarians intended to assess the situation of the Sahrawi population. In a letter to the Spanish Foreign Ministry, Sumar MPs described the incident as «extremely serious», highlighting that it involved an official visit by Basque parliamentarians, which had been previously communicated to the ministry. The MPs have called on the ministry, led by José Manuel Alvarez, to request clarification from Morocco regarding the decision to block the delegation's entry into Laayoune. They also seek to understand the criteria Rabat uses to allow or deny foreign access to the Sahara. Furthermore, Sumar's deputies have inquired whether the Spanish Foreign Ministry plans to implement measures to guarantee the entry of human rights monitoring delegations into the Sahara. This appeal follows public statements by Mikel Arruabarrena (PNV) Jon Hernández (Sumar and leader of IU) and Amancay Villalba (EH Bildu). These members of the Basque Parliament's Committee for Equality and Cooperation for Development confirmed that Moroccan authorities prevented them from disembarking and proceeding to Laayoune. The purpose of their visit was to advocate for the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination.
