Starting October 17, 2024, Iceland's Play Airlines will offer twice-weekly direct flights between Reykjavik and Marrakech. This marks the first direct air connection between Iceland and Morocco. The Moroccan National Tourist Office (ONMT) announced this initiative as part of its strategy to diversify markets and strengthen air transport. In May 2024, a Light Tour engaged with 150 Scandinavian operators. The partnership between ONMT and Play Airlines includes joint marketing efforts targeting travelers from Iceland and North America. Morocco aims to benefit from Reykjavik's position as a hub connecting Scandinavian markets, Western Europe, and North America. Play Airlines operates from five North American airports: New York, Washington, Baltimore, Boston, and Toronto. The new flight schedule will provide connections between the USA and Morocco via Reykjavik, especially as Iceland is a strategic market for Moroccan tourism. In terms of air travel, the ONMT has doubled air capacity from Scandinavia for winter 2024 by partnering with major airlines in Northern European countries. This includes 21 direct weekly flights linking Stockholm, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Oslo, and Reykjavik to Marrakech and Agadir.
