Madrid hosted, Monday, a meeting between the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jose Manuel Albares, and the UN Secretary General personal envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura. The work of the UN envoy is «fully supported by the Spanish government in his work», wrote Albares on X (formerly Twitter) following his meeting with de Mistura. The meeting in Madrid took place as the Biden administration sent the US Deputy Secretary of State for North Africa Joshua Harris to Morocco. The visit is meant to relaunch the negotiation process led by the UN, the US Department of State announced on Sunday. The last meeting that brought together the parties in question (Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and Polisario) dates back to March 2019, as part of the second round-table, initiated in 2018 by the former UN personal envoy Horst Kohler.
