In a recent communiqué, Algeria has reacted to resolution 2494, adopted by the UN Security Council on Western Sahara, stressing that it is «unbalanced». Algeria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs sees the resolution, voted by 13 members, is a «simple technical renewal, with almost the same terms» that the previous resolution included. «Resolution 2494 (2019) did not receive unanimous support from the Security Council members», wrote the ministry in a statement relayed by the Algerian press agency (APS) on Thursday. The same source recalled that South Africa and Russia abstained during the vote. Algeria's reaction to the new resolution, which extends MINURSO's mandate to 12 months, is similar to the one of the Polisario Front. The latter voiced its disappointment, threatening to «reconsider its engagement in the UN peace process».
