Morocco welcomed the 2351 Resolution adopted yesterday 28th of April by the UN Security Council. In a communiqué issued today by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Internationl Cooperation, the Kingdom showed its backing of the UN decision. This resolution prorogates the Minurso's mandate in the region for an additional year, strictly within its current prerogatives. The Ministry stated that this step will take into consideration the remarks and recommendations that the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, mentioned in his latest report released earlier this month. The Security Council, according to the same source, will stick to the parameters designed for the political process in 2007. This process must be carried out in a «realistic and compromising way», acknowledging the efforts that Morocco has been performing since 2006. Moreover, the Ministry highlighted the autonomy plan suggested by the North African country and which was described as «serious and credible». The Security Council also joined Guterres in his position, insisting that «Algeria and Mauritania, as neighboring countries, can and should make important contributions to this process», concludes the Ministry. For the record, Algeria is deemed equally responsible for the census of the people residing in Tinduf camps. Indeed, the Council for the sixth consecutive year emphasized the necessity of conducting said census. The Ministry's release adds that the UN Council «insists that efforts should be put in place with regards to the matter».
