Rabat, Temara and Sale will see their tramway network extended in the period from 2017 to 2022. The project will be financed at MAD 5.6 billion adding a new transportation capacity for more than 560,000 potential new users. Details about the tramway extensions were published on the official website of the company in charge of the Bouregreg river banks development. The new lines will expand the tramway system in Rabat by 14.3 kilometers, and will include the creation of 4 stations in Avenue Yaacoub Al Mansour (2.3 Km), 10 stations in the Hay Riad neighborhood (5 Km) and 7 stations in Menzah and Almassira areas (4.5 Km). The extension of the tramway system will also cover Sale by extending the city's line to reach Hay Moulay Ismail, Karia and Sala Al Jadida. Temara will also benefit from the project as the city will be provided with 5 new stations. The tramway has gained throughout five years a huge popularity among Moroccans. It is now the fastest and easiest way of circulating in the city. Statistics show that more than 17,000 users are subscribed to the tramway monthly offers and that 50% of them are students. Women tend to use the tram more than men as numbers suggest (54% women and 46% men). Moreover, 64% of the tramway users have a car, which further shows the popularity of such transportation means, even among automobilists. The current tramway system in Rabat and Sale includes two 20 Km of lines that carry every day around 110,000 passengers. The tramway extension project was approved in May 2014 to maintain the dynamism of the region and support the ongoing development of the Kingdom.
