Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita is set to meet with Marco Rubio this Tuesday afternoon in Washington, as reported by the State Department. This will be the first meeting between the Moroccan Foreign Minister and his U.S. counterpart since Donald Trump returned to the White House on January 20. Last week, Marco Rubio hosted his counterparts from Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, two other signatories of the Abraham Accords in 2020. As a reminder, Nasser Bourita and Marco Rubio had a phone conversation on January 27, focusing on «the importance of the strategic partnership«between the two nations «in the service of regional and international peace and security». This meeting between Bourita and Rubio comes as the Security Council is preparing to discuss the issue of Western Sahara on April 14. It presents an opportunity for the Trump administration to publicly reaffirm its recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the region, a decision that was officially announced on December 10, 2020.
