The Mauritanian Minister of Foreign Affairs is visiting Morocco. On Wednesday, March 26, Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug met with his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, in Rabat. Following their meeting, he praised the excellent relations between Rabat and Nouakchott in a statement to the press. «Our relations are the best they have been in years», affirmed the Mauritanian foreign minister. Ould Merzoug explained that his visit follows the December 20, 2024, meeting in Casablanca between King Mohammed VI and President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani. «That was an important meeting that breathed new life into bilateral cooperation. Today, this cooperation has reached a high level, with ongoing consultations», he emphasized. He also highlighted that last year, Morocco provided «daily and continuous support to Mauritania» during its rotating presidency of the African Union, both at the AU Summit and the Executive Council levels. During the December 20 meeting, King Mohammed VI and President Ould El Ghazouani reaffirmed «their determination to develop strategic projects to strengthen ties between the two neighboring countries and coordinate their contributions to royal initiatives in Africa». These initiatives include the African-Atlantic gas pipeline and efforts to facilitate Sahel states' access to the Atlantic Ocean, according to a statement from the royal cabinet.
