It's official: Morocco, Portugal, and Spain have been designated as host countries for the 2030 World Cup, following an extraordinary meeting of the Congress of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) held this Wednesday via videoconference. The day before, an analysis contained in the evaluation reports of the bids determined that all the dossiers exceeded the minimum requirements needed to host the football extravaganza. Thus, the body decided to present these bids to the extraordinary Congress, according to a statement published the day before. In October 2023, the FIFA Council had already unanimously chosen the Morocco-Spain-Portugal bid as the sole candidacy for the 2030 World Cup. Thus, this edition will be one that brings together different nations around the values of football, marking the centenary of the World Cup, celebrated the same year. For this reason, it was previously decided that the first three matches of the extravaganza would be held in Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, where it all began. At the time, the FIFA president highlighted the symbolism of this sporting communion, which aims to be universal: «In a divided world, FIFA and football unite», he said. Emphasizing that two continents, Africa and Europe, will be «united not only in a celebration of football, but also in ensuring a unique social and cultural cohesion», he welcomed this edition, which he believes will embody a «beautiful message of peace, tolerance, and inclusion».
