On Monday, December 2, Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita met with his Ecuadorian counterpart, Gabriela Sommerfeld, via videoconference. The Ecuadorian minister reiterated her country's support for a peaceful and lasting solution to the Sahara question within the framework of the political process conducted exclusively under UN auspices. She also reaffirmed Ecuador's support for the efforts undertaken by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and his personal envoy, in accordance with the relevant Security Council resolutions on this issue, the two parties said in a joint statement. Sommerfeld praised the importance of the autonomy plan for the Sahara presented by Morocco in 2007. Ecuador suspended its recognition of the «SADR» on October 22. The decision came just after left-wing candidate Luisa Gonzalez lost the October 15, 2023, elections to the current president, Daniel Noboa. Last week, Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita held talks with his Panamanian counterpart via videoconference, another Latin American country that has suspended relations with the SADR.
