The port of Tangier Med has been ranked fourth in the World Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) for 2023. According to this index, compiled by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence, Tangier Med outperforms all African and European ports for the second year in a row. The port of Yangshan in China tops the ranking, followed by Salalah in Oman and Cartagena in Colombia, while Tanjung Pelepas (Malaysia) rounded out the top 5 best-performing ports, the World Bank said in a press release on Tuesday. The CPPI index is a comparative tool designed to serve as a benchmark for key players in the global economy: governments, port authorities, development agencies, supranational organizations and private operators involved in trade, logistics and supply chains. This index ranks 405 container ports worldwide according to their efficiency, primarily measured by ship dwell time. Its main aim is to highlight opportunities for improvement that would benefit the various stakeholders in the international trading system and global supply chains, from port authorities to shipping lines, national governments and consumers. East and Southeast Asian ports account for the lion's share of this ranking, occupying 13 of the top 20 places worldwide. The fourth edition of this index is based on a data set of unprecedented scope, with more than 182,000 calls recorded over the past year, 238.2 million container movements and some 381 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). Given that more than 80% of merchandise trade takes place by sea, the resilience, efficiency and overall performance of ports play a decisive role in global markets and economic development, stresses the international financial institution. The CPPI 2023 includes 57 new ports, including Muuga in Estonia and Duqm in Oman, as well as several notable developments.
