Days after he was summoned by Morocco's national football team coach to play for the Atlas Lions, Spanish Moroccan attacking midfielder Brahim Diaz is criticized by Spain's national conservative political party Vox. In a video, the president of the party's Melilla section addresses the footballer's dual nationality. José Miguel Tasende argues that the Civil Code of Spain does not grant citizens of Moroccan origin the right to dual citizenship. Instead, this right is only given to citizens with South American descent and those originally from Philippines, Equatorial Guinea, France, Andorra, in addition to Sephardic Jews, stressed the head of Vox Mellila. Vox has already openly rejected granting dual citizenship to Spanish nationals of Moroccan descent. In November 2021, its president submitted a proposal to the House of Representatives calling for applicants for Spanish citizenship to «definitively renounce» their former nationality. In February 2022, the Vox initiative was overwhelmingly rejected by the plenary session of the House of Representatives : 292 MPs voted against it, and only 54, all Vox members, supported it.
