After knocking on the door of the UN, the Polisario threatens to derail the Spanish project to transfer control of the Sahara's airspace to Morocco by seizing the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU). Oubi Bachir, the representative of the Front in Geneva, made the threat in statements to Algeria's state-owned public radio Radio Algerie. «As Spain has not only provided political support for Morocco's expansionist ambitions but has also begun to provide the Makhzen regime with legal tools to legitimize the process of occupation and annexation of the territory of Western Sahara, we will pursue the Spanish government before international judicial bodies, including the European Court of Justice», he threatened. The CJEU had already issued verdicts in favor of the Polisario in 2016, 2018, and 2021. On March 21, the Advocate General of the Court, Frenchman Jean Richard de la Tour, is expected to give his opinion on the appeal presented by the European Union, which seeks to annul the judgment of September 29, 2021. Last week, the leader of the Polisario sent a letter to the UN Secretary General, regarding the Spanish government's plan to transfer control of the Sahara's airspace to Morocco. In his letter, Brahim Ghali denounced what he called «a violation of the international status of the territory as a region included on the United Nations list awaiting decolonization, as well as of Spain's international obligations as the administering State of Western Sahara».
