Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune reaffirmed, yesterday in a long speech delivered before both Houses of Parliament, his country's «unwavering support» for the Polisario. The Head of State called the matter a «national cause», the same as that of Palestine. The two matters will be the pillars of Algeria's foreign policy during its mandate at the UN Security Council, expected to start on January 1, 2024 and last until December 31, 2025. To Tebboune, Western Sahara «is a question of decolonization which is registered with the United Nations decolonization commission and it is for this reason that Algeria supports the fight of the Sahrawi people and not out of hatred towards our Moroccan brothers». For the record, it was Morocco which submitted this file to the UN in the early 1960s. This position reaffirmed by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune sounds like a disavowal on his part of the latest statement by his Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, on Algeria's determination to reconcile with Morocco. «We can consider Algeria as being more focused on finding a quick solution» to the crisis with the Kingdom, said Attaf.
