The Tangier Police services opened a judicial investigation under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor's office to determine the circumstances of smuggling 505 kg of chira aboard a commercial vehicle registered in Morocco, which was seized at the port of Algeciras on July 28. According to a statement from the National Police (DGSN), police services were alerted by the center of joint police cooperation between the Moroccan and Spanish authorities that a car loaded with half a ton of chira was seized at the port of Algeciras. Following this alert, it was decided to open a thorough judicial investigation to arrest all possible suspects in the trafficking and facilitation of transit of this drug, the statement said. The investigations revealed the alleged involvement of a sergeant and a senior police inspector, who work at the local squad of the national territory surveillance at the port of Tangier Med, in facilitating the passage of the driver without undergoing the necessary inspection formalities. The two suspects were remanded in custody to conduct the investigation, the same source said, adding that three other individuals, including a woman, her 17-year-old minor girl and a third one with a criminal record in drug cases, are also being investigated for their alleged links with the criminal network implicated in this case. The National Judicial Police Squad will continue its investigations in this case under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor's office, in order to arrest all those involved as well as possible accomplices, it concluded.
