The National Assembly of Senegal has unanimously passed a law allowing the president to ratify a judicial agreement with Morocco, enabling the extradition of detainees and convicts, particularly migrants in irregular administrative situations. The 24 articles of the text establish a legal framework for the transfer process and consular assistance to detainees, reports RFI this Wednesday. Morocco currently hosts nearly 300 Senegalese detainees and a community of 200,000 expatriates. MP Amadou Ba, cited by the French media, emphasized that the agreement also ensures proper care for migrants in case of arrest. «It was very difficult for consuls to work without an appropriate legal framework. Now, we have this framework to better assist Senegalese», he stated. The law's adoption comes shortly after the Senegalese government announced that former President Macky Sall, who now resides in Morocco, «would face trial». However, former Minister of Justice and Alliance for the Republic member Aissata Tall Sall insists that «this law does not target the former president». «But why is President Macky Sall suddenly at the center of this discussion? The president of the Commission had to issue a statement clarifying that President Macky Sall is not concerned at all», she questioned.
