Gabon's transitional president, General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, expressed solidarity with the Muslim community in Gabon and Morocco by visiting the Hassan II Mosque in Libreville. «I visited the Hassan II Mosque for the breaking of the fast prayer, expressing my support for the Muslim community during this blessed month of sacrifice. May the Almighty grant us His blessings and peace. May this Ramadan be a source of mercy for all», he wrote on X. The general also met with officials from the Higher Council of Islamic Affairs, as announced by the Gabonese presidency on Instagram. According to a Gabonese media outlet, citing sources within the presidential palace, General Oligui Nguema visited Morocco at the end of February. He had previously traveled to the kingdom for a private visit after attending the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Oligui Nguema led the August 30, 2023, coup that ousted former Gabonese President Ali Bongo. Despite this regime change, relations between Morocco and Gabon remain strong, with Libreville continuing to support Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara at international meetings.
