The secretary general of the Istiqlal Party (Independence Party) Nizar Baraka reacted, Monday, to the tragic incident that led to the death of 28 textile workers in Tangier after the clandestine unit in which they were working was flooded by the heavy rains. Baraka urged the government to «urgently protect thousands of other workers hired by illegal industrial units throughout the Kingdom and transform them into organized and safe spaces». He also asked the government to help these units adopt «safe and decent» working conditions. Moreover, the party urged the governmnet to determine responsibilities and impose sanctions The unit located in the basement of a villa was flooded by the heavy rains. 28 workers were killed in the flooding while 18 others were injured after water damaged textile machines and caused a short circuit. The victims include men and women aged between 20 and 40. Following the tragedy, the local authorities announced the opening of an investigation to shed light on the circumstances of the incident and determine the responsibilities.
