The UN Security Council held a closed-door meeting, Wednesday, to discuss the Western Sahara conflict. Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Western Sahara and Head of MINURSO Colin Stewart and Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Bintou Keita commented on the situation in Western Sahara in the last six months, following the adoption of resolution 2468 in April. The meeting addressed, as well, the appointment of a new personal envoy to Western Sahara. The position has remained vacant since May, when former German president Horst Kohler resigned due to health reasons. For the record, the Security Council will have to adopt a new resolution to extend the MINURSO's mandate. In the coming days, the United States will have to submit to the Security Council a draft of the resolution, which will be adopted on October 30.
