Muslims in the UK are angry at British multinational retailer Marks & Spencer for one item it is selling. According to British tabloid The Sun, these people are demanding a boycott of M&S because of a toilet paper that reportedly has the world Allah written on it. After a video, in which a man shows the product claiming that it has «Allah» on it, went viral, more than 2200 people signed a petition accusing the brand of «insulting Islam». «They have the word 'Allah' written in Arabic on their aloe vera toilet rolls», wrote Ahmed Musa who launched the petition on a platform called Change. «This is a very weasly and pathetic attempt to insult Islam», he added. The British retailer responded on Twitter to its angry customers saying that : «The motif on the aloe vera toilet tissue, which we have been selling for over five years, is categorically of an aloe vera leaf and we have investigated and confirmed this with our suppliers». The boycott campaign launched against Marks & Spencer is similar to the scandal that surrounded items sold by American e-commerce company Amazon earlier this month. Amazon removes products deemed «offensive» to the Muslim community In fact, bathroom and outdoor mats featuring verses from the Quran and the word Allah have been removed from Amazon after it received complaints from the Muslim community in the US. The decision was taken after the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a Muslim civil rights and advocacy group in the US, notified the online giant, January 3rd, about the «offensive» items.
