Following the circulation of shocking videos showing teenagers brutally torturing animals, the main minor featured in the clips has been identified as a resident of Sidi Yahya El Gharb. Human rights organizations involved in the case are calling for legal action against him and urging greater awareness of animal welfare. Over the past two days, disturbing videos showing teenagers viciously abusing animals have gone viral in Morocco, triggering a wave of outrage on social media. The footage, widely condemned for its gratuitous cruelty, has sparked a deeper debate about compassion, education, and the disturbing normalization of violence among youth. The boy seen in the videos—believed to be no older than 14—reportedly comes from Douar Al-Sikka, on the outskirts of Sidi Yahya El Gharb. The footage was swiftly deleted from his social media accounts once it began to spread, but not before activists and citizens alike began demanding answers about his identity and whereabouts. The Animal Welfare for Rescue association, which has taken up the case, says the incident reflects a serious behavioral problem and a broader societal issue. The group, which also leads a national coalition of six organizations dedicated to animal and environmental protection, warned that these actions point to «a deep educational crisis» and a «troubling lack of awareness of values like mercy and kindness» among some youth. «From the moment the videos surfaced, we were inundated with messages on our platform», said Zouheir labdaoui, president of the association. «What we saw was horrifying. It suggests that many children are growing up with absolutely no exposure to the concept of animal welfare—children who are supposed to be the youth of tomorrow». Justice and better education on compassion Labdaoui expressed concern about the boy's apparent motivation, saying, «It's disgraceful that a child has gotten used to posting this kind of content just to create a buzz. He's trying to build some kind of notoriety at the expense of innocent creatures». «If a teenager can so casually abuse a helpless animal, what might he be capable of tomorrow? Carrying a weapon? Attacking another person? It could easily become normalized behavior», he denounced. In response, the association has already taken legal steps. The videos were documented by a judicial officer, and the group is preparing to file an urgent complaint with the public prosecutor. A site visit is also planned for the coming days, underscoring their commitment to taking both preventive and legal action when needed. Labdaoui believes this incident cannot be separated from the child's upbringing. «We hold his family directly responsible. Compassion toward animals is a reflection of one's moral compass. This boy clearly grew up in an environment where basic values and care were missing». The association is calling for better education on animal welfare both at home and in schools. It continues to organize awareness campaigns in educational institutions and disseminate content through its online platforms, aiming to foster empathy and responsible behavior toward animals. Penalties… just the beginning This is far from the only case the association has taken on. In the past, it has dealt with similar incidents—including one in Casablanca, where a man was caught on camera by his neighbor abusing his dog. The association is currently pursuing legal action against him. In a related development, the Meknes Court of First Instance recently sentenced a man to two months in prison and fined him 250 dirhams for animal cruelty. The case was brought to light by the Salsabil Association for Animal Welfare, based in Fez. The defendant was also ordered to pay 3,000 dirhams in damages to four of his neighbors, who joined the case as civil parties. «Two months isn't enough, but it's a start—and at least a partial deterrent», said labdaoui. «Four years ago, we began seeing real enforcement of Morocco's animal protection law after it had been ignored for years. That gives us a glimmer of hope for improving animal welfare in the country». He ended with a call to action directed at civil society, authorities, and parents alike: «We need a collective effort—awareness campaigns and firm enforcement of the law—so we can build an environment where animals are treated with the compassion and dignity they deserve».
