Two Spanish deputies from the far-left Sumar coalition have expressed outrage at the country's meteorological agency (AEMET), accusing it of recently sharing a map of Morocco on social media that includes Western Sahara. Enrique Santiago and Toni Valero swiftly responded by submitting written questions to the government of Pedro Sanchez on Tuesday, April 8. They are seeking to know «whether the executive plans to correct this error» and «what measures it intends to take to support the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination through a referendum, in line with United Nations resolutions». The two deputies stressed that «the use of an incorrect map of Morocco, including Western Sahara, is not an isolated incident. Several public organizations and entities, such as Enaire and RTVE, have already circulated similar maps». In their view, «Spain is failing in its obligations to the United Nations as the administering power of Western Sahara», and should instead be working to «ensure decolonization and self-determination by referendum» for the region.
