The Canary Islands Coalition, which has led the autonomous government of the Canary Islands since the summer of 2023, has voiced concerns over investment projects that American billionaire Elon Musk is reportedly planning in the Sahara. «We have asked what the Spanish government knows about this matter», stated Cristina Valido, the sole deputy of the Canary Islands Coalition, during a session in the Spanish Parliament's lower house. «Today, we learn that Morocco is negotiating with Elon Musk for investments in Western Sahara», she lamented. The parliamentarian also reiterated her party's concerns over the agreement between Morocco and an Israeli company for oil exploration in Saharan waters, «215 kilometers from the islands», she specified. She urged Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to ensure the security of the archipelago in light of these American projects in the Sahara. Valido's stance aligns with that of her party's spokesperson in the local Parliament, who has also expressed concerns about Israeli oil exploration in the region. He called on the central government to «reactivate discussions between Spain and Morocco to delineate the maritime border of the archipelago».
