Algeria is making strategic moves to enhance its influence in the Sahel region, taking cues from Morocco's recent diplomatic initiatives. The North African nation has proposed the construction of a power plant in Niger, signaling its intent to strengthen ties with the Sahel countries. On Thursday, Mourad Adjel, CEO of Sonelgaz Group, engaged in a virtual meeting with Fatih Abarchi, General Manager of Niger's electricity company, Nigelec. The discussions centered on accelerating cooperation and partnership between the two nations, as reported by Algerian media. Adjel highlighted Sonelgaz's keen interest in investing in Niger's energy sector, proposing a collaborative project to build a power plant. He assured that Sonelgaz is prepared to dispatch a team of specialists to conduct a field study for the proposed initiative. However, the backdrop to these developments is a period of strained relations between Algeria and the Sahel countries. Tensions have been particularly pronounced with Niger's ruling military authorities. Algeria had previously backed the ousted president of Niger, leading to friction with the current regime in Niamey. The Nigerien authorities had criticized Algeria's announcement that Niger had accepted its mediation proposal for a six-month transitional period, a claim made in October 2023. This move by Algeria comes in the wake of Morocco's successful diplomatic engagement in the region. Last December, under the directive of King Mohammed VI, Morocco inaugurated the «King Mohammed VI» power plant in Niger, a significant gesture that underscored Morocco's commitment to fostering bilateral relations with the Sahel nation.
