Incursions by the Algerian army into neighboring countries have become a recurring issue. Following an incident in Mauritania, the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces have now apprehended Algerian soldiers, including an officer, who were traveling in a Jeep. The incident reportedly occurred on Monday in the M'Hamid El Ghizlane region. The Algerian patrol, which had ventured approximately 10 kilometers into Moroccan territory, claimed to the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces that they had «gotten lost». Subsequently, the Moroccan authorities released the Algerian soldiers. M'Hamid El Ghizlane is home to a base of the Royal Armed Forces. Notably, this area is not situated in the Sahara or within the buffer zone. This event comes just a week after an Algerian army patrol entered Mauritanian territory. The soldiers apprehended in that incident offered «clumsy and unconvincing justifications», asserting that they were in pursuit of terrorists and that poor communication networks prevented them from contacting Mauritanian authorities, according to reports from a media outlet in Nouakchott.
