Diplomatic ties between Morocco and Mauritania continue to deepen, as demonstrated by Friday's meeting between Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita and the President of Mauritania's National Assembly, Mohamed Ould Meguett. The visit comes in a context shaped by King Mohammed VI's recent call, during the opening of the first session of the fourth legislative year, to bolster parliamentary diplomacy in defending the Kingdom's strategic interests, particularly the Moroccan identity of the Sahara and its territorial integrity. In February, the initiative to create a Morocco-Mauritania parliamentary forum was already announced, opening a new stage in institutional collaboration. This space for dialogue aims to deepen bilateral relations by strengthening exchanges between the elected representatives of both countries. This project reflects the common desire to build strong ties based on cooperation and mutual respect. In the same spirit, the Mauritania-Morocco parliamentary friendship group, formed this year, embodies a major advancement in interparliamentary relations. Bringing together 20 deputies representing all Mauritanian political forces, both from the majority and the opposition, it is distinguished by the diversity and quality of its members. This group is considered one of the most influential in the Mauritanian National Assembly. This diplomatic and parliamentary rapprochement illustrates a promising dynamic, where the two nations share common objectives, ranging from the defense of territorial integrity issues to the promotion of joint development projects. For the record, Mauritania has recognized the «Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR)» since 1984. A notable rapprochement with Morocco has taken place in recent years, but Nouakchott attempts to maintain a balance in its relations with Algiers and Rabat.
