President of the Regional Government of Andalusia Juan Moreno has been on a three-day visit to Morocco. While in the Kingdom, Moreno held a series of meetings with Moroccan officials, including those dealing with migration issue. Pressured by his far-right allies, mainly from VOX, President Moreno flew to Rabat to ask the Moroccan authorities to curb migrant surge. However, the Andalusian president was met with an unexpected reaction. The Moroccan authorities informed Moreno that the country has not received yet the entire sum (140 million euros) promised by the European Union. The Moroccan side told Moreno that Brussels wants the Kingdom to limit the number of migrants trying to reach Europe without having to «give much in exchange», Spanish daily Diario de Sevilla reported. The same source revealed that the same issue was at the heart of a meeting held between Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita and Juan Moreno. Bourita explained during these talks that out of the 30 million euros the Kingdom has received from Brussels, 20 million euros were spent to manage migration. On January 13 in Rabat, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini promised that «in the coming months Morocco will be sent the remaining 110 million euros».
