In Germany, two senior officials said that the country is in the need of a more progressive form of Islam that goes hand in hand with the European way of life, Deutsche Welle (DW) reported Thursday. The call was published by German Health Minister Jens Spahn and Schleswig-Holstein State Premier Daniel Gunther, Thursday, on a regional daily called Rheinische Post. «Instead of tolerating symbols of a reactionary, misogynistic form of Islam, we must promote the development of a European Islam, which shares our values, in order to preserve our free European way of life», wrote the two politicians. In their appeal, Spahn and Gunther made mention of burkas, writing : «When women and girls appear fully-veiled at universities and schools, then we do not just have the option to resist, we must resist». The two politicians said in their joint declaration that failed «deportations» are often seen as «burdens on the local population», referring to integration. For the record, Spahn is a conservative politician who wanted to replace Chancellor Angela Merkel, while Gunther is seen as a liberal member of the Christian Democrat party (CDU).
