As planned, the Security Council held a meeting last night in a closed session on the Western Sahara conflict. Horst Kohler, the Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Western Sahara presented during the meeting, his first remarks following his latest trip to the region in October. The briefing of the German official is «an important contribution to give a new boost, and a new spirit to advance in the political process», said Sebastiano Cardi, Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations in New York. Cardi pointed out that the personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General noticed a «constructive attitude» among all his interlocutors, says the Spanish news agency EFE. The council's members support the «vision» that Horst Köhler has presented and are waiting to see his next initiatives.
