After obtaining observer member status with PARLATINO (Latin American and Caribbean Parliament) in September, Algeria has now set its sights on PARLACEN (Central American Parliament). This is evidenced by the memorandum of understanding signed on Wednesday, December 4, in Panama City between the Algerian Chamber of Deputies and PARLACEN, a body that brings together El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, and the Dominican Republic. «This agreement represents an important step towards strengthening relations between Algeria and Central America. It also reflects the commitment of both parties to expanding parliamentary cooperation frameworks and supporting issues of sustainable development and international peace», says the Algerian Lower House in a press release. The Moroccan Parliament has been an observer member of PARLACEN since February 2022. Relations between the two legislative institutions are close. In June 2016, the executive board of PARLACEN held a meeting in Laayoune with the board of the Chamber of Councillors. The current president of PARLACEN is Carlos René Hernández Castillo from El Salvador, a country that recognizes Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara. In PARLACEN, Algeria can count on the support of Nicaragua and Honduras (two states that have established relations with «RASD») to obtain observer member status.
