The local authorities of Melilla, in collaboration with their Moroccan counterparts, succeeded Sunday in aborting an attempt led by some sixty migrants to cross the barrier separating Morocco from Melilla. According to Europa Press, a spokesperson for the government delegation in Melilla explained that the city authorities activated the anti-intrusion protocol after the Civil Guard learned that a group of about 60 migrants is approaching the border area. The alert enabled members of the Civil Guard, supported by members of the national police and local police, to cut off traffic on the ring road that crosses the six-meter-high double barrier and prevent the migrants from entering the city. «The rapid action of the Moroccan security forces made it possible to stop the assault before the migrants reached the barrier», said the spokesperson for the government delegation in Melilla. A few hours earlier, more than fifty young Moroccans had managed to swim to Ceuta.
