King Mohammed VI has extended a congratulatory message to Ahmed Al-Charaa upon his assumption of the presidency of the Syrian Arab Republic during the transitional period. The monarch expressed his wishes for Al-Charaa's «success and achievement» in «the exercise of his high functions and heavy missions». He reiterated «the position of the Kingdom of Morocco, which has always been to support the brotherly Syrian people in achieving their aspirations for freedom, tranquility, and stability». It is worth noting that Morocco shut down its embassy in Damascus in November 2011. This move was followed by the expulsion of the ambassador of Bashar Al-Assad's regime from Rabat in July 2012. King Mohammed VI highlighted that this «constant position encourages, today as yesterday, the Kingdom to stand alongside the Syrian people as they go through a delicate and decisive stage in their history, in perfect harmony with its principled position in favor of the territorial integrity and national sovereignty of Syria». This congratulatory message from King Mohammed VI to Ahmed Al-Charaa comes just weeks after a telephone conversation between Nasser Bourita and his Syrian counterpart, Asaad Al-Shibani. Additionally, Morocco has condemned Israeli ambitions on Arab territories, including Syria.
