Spanish shipping company Balearia has announced the imminent launch of an all-electric cruise line connecting the ports of Tarifa, Cadiz, and TangierMedina. This groundbreaking initiative marks the first 100% green sea lane between Spain and Morocco. During the presentation at the 45th edition of the International Tourism Fair (FITUR 2025) in Madrid, Balearia's president, Adolfo Autor Martinez, highlighted the project's role in electrifying port infrastructure on both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar. Martinez described the new line as the fastest and most sustainable sea lane between Europe and Africa, featuring two electric ships specifically designed for the Tarifa-Tangier route. He emphasized that this endeavor represents a model of modernization and innovation. The construction of these electric ferries aligns with Balearia's strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Morocco's Ambassador to Spain, Karima Benyaich, praised the project as «innovative, sustainable, and avant-garde», noting its potential to strengthen ties between Morocco and Spain and support their joint bid to host the 2030 World Cup. This initiative offers an opportunity for both countries to enhance their maritime partnership and contribute to environmentally conscious management. «This project reflects the shared vision of the two countries to transform the 14 kilometers that separate them into a model of innovative and sustainable cooperation», Ambassador Benyaich stated. She noted that the project not only fortifies historical ties but also paves the way for a future grounded in environmental respect and shared prosperity. Spanish Secretary of State for Transport and Sustainable Mobility, José Antonio Santano Clavero, described the venture as «a symbolic project that embodies the values uniting the two neighboring and fraternal countries through a sustainable maritime line connecting the North and South Mediterranean and responding to future requirements». Gerardo Landaluce, President of the Port Authority of Algeciras, remarked that this sustainable maritime line, the first between Morocco and Spain, will bolster cooperation and partnership between the ports on both sides of the strait, enhancing the historical ties between the two kingdoms.
