On Tuesday, the Marrakech police prefecture, in collaboration with their Safi counterparts, successfully intercepted an international drug trafficking attempt involving 9.8 tonnes of chira, according to security sources. The operation unfolded in the «Addher» area within the rural commune of Kouzemt - Imintanoute, based on precise intelligence provided by the Direction Générale de la Surveillance du Territoire (DGST). Authorities apprehended six individuals, including an official and a former elected representative, for their alleged ties to a criminal network engaged in the international trafficking of drugs and psychotropic substances, as reported by the same source. The suspects, aged between 29 and 59, were caught in the act as they prepared for an international drug trafficking operation by sea. The investigation led to the discovery of 9.8 tonnes of chira at multiple locations, alongside a commercial vehicle with a false number plate, an inflatable boat, and a marine engine. The suspects have been placed in custody for further investigation under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor's office. This aims to uncover any potential ramifications of the case and identify additional accomplices. This significant operation is part of the ongoing joint efforts by the national security services and the DGST to combat cross-border criminal networks, particularly those involved in the international trafficking of drugs and psychotropic substances.
