The Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), the oldest think tank dedicated to defense and security around the world, on Wednesday called the autonomy plan for Western Sahara proposed by Morocco «the only credible, lasting, realistic and constructive solution» that the United Kingdom must «support». The autonomy plan illustrates «a commitment to a promising political and economic future for the population, with respect for the rule of law, democratic procedures and sustained development», explains the British think tank in an analysis by Sir Simon Mayall. According to this retired British army officer and advisor for the Middle East at the Ministry of Defence, «resolution of the Western Sahara issue would contribute to the security, stability and prosperity of the whole region, and in doing so would combat the rise in Islamic fundamentalism and extremism that feeds off grievances and poverty». Morocco has clearly demonstrated its «commitment to the region over several decades of significant investment, constructing extensive economic and communications infrastructure and by generating thousands of jobs», notes the author of the analysis. Referring to the progress made in the southern provinces of the Kingdom, Sir Simon Mayall noted that it is «one of the most developed regions in Morocco», with a participation rate of more than 66% during the last elections, held in September 2021. The UK's main allies, including France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and the United States, have expressed support for Morocco's autonomy plan, which they consider «the best way to bring a future of peace and prosperity to the population and an end to the dispute», says Mayall, adding that the majority of Arab states, as well as many countries in Africa and the Caribbean, are adopting the same position. He also recalled that the United Kingdom and Morocco share several points in common in terms of commitment to the rule of law, respect for human rights, religious tolerance and pluralism, sustainable development and respect for the environment.
