Pedro Sanchez' cabinet is expected to answer questions, asked by Spanish deputies on the closure of commercial borders, separating Morocco and Melilla. The request was submitted by the People's Party, Ciudadanos and PDeCAT. The Spanish Foreign Minister will be summoned on the 13th of September to the Lower House of the parliament. Josep Borell will have to answer questions asked by Spanish deputies on the decision of the Moroccan Customs Administration, which closed since August the 1st commercial borders separating the Kingdom and Melilla. The topic has been discussed during a special meeting held on Monday, 27th of August, at the House of Representatives. Borell has answered the request, submitted earlier this month by a group of deputies from the People's Party (PP). The latter urged Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to «quickly» act on the issue and to take «diplomatic actions» for the implementation of an «urgent solution». PP has even called the situation a way for Morocco to «betray historical ties with Melilla». Backed by many parties The initiative launched by PP was also backed by members of the Catalan European Democratic Party (PDeCAT), which is currently considered as the ruling party in Catalonia. The nationalist party, although does not share the same positions as the People's Party, supports the request as a way of responding to Rabat's stance. In fact, in May 2015, Morocco refused to welcome the party's leader Carles Puigdemont, who was president of Catalonia at the time. The Ciudadanos deputies also supported the request of PP, their former allies. On the other hand, Podemos was not part of the initiative. The left-wing party known for criticizing Morocco has for the first time defended it. It urged the Sanchez' cabinet to adopt an approach that would consider Morocco as a neighbor, reported Spanish Media on Monday. Podemos is the only political party in Spain that has not commented yet on the closure of commercial borders between Morocco and Melilla. However, Unidos Podemos submitted a request, demanding the Spanish Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and Environment Luis Planas to appear before the congress of deputies in order to explain the new fisheries agreement reached by the European Commission and Rabat in July, says Europa Press on Monday. Unido Podemos's request was supported by other political parties, including the Republican Left of Catalonia, PDeCAT and PNV and Cuidadanos.
